Originally, this page was devoted to Old Time Gospel music, those I remember from my youth in the thirties and forties. But as I found them, I've added others outside the gospel genre, ranging from the formal hymns sang in many churches to inspirational sangs from many sources, including Bluegrass and Broadway. I hope you enjoy the Selections I've listed. They are some of my favourites. More will be added as I find them.
Simply click on your selection.
I have been able to find the lyrics for many of the listings and I've also added background stories when I thought they might be of interest. Some of the backgrounds are quite tragic, some simply uplifting and heroic, and others dripping with nostalgia or pathos. While reading the backgrounds, I was struck by how often the originators seemed to sit down and dash off the words and/or music without hardly a second thought. I hope you find them as fascinating as I have.
This is a work in progress; as I gather more lyrics and/or backgrounds, they will be added to this page, so please drop by often.
